There have been theories over the years that old domains (or perhaps new domains) get some kind of ranking boost. Google says it’s not true.

Two different Tweets were published last week regarding the age of domains and how that affects rankings. The first, from Rajesh Kumar, said:
“Domain age only help to gain the trust value; it may be one of the signals from more than 200 signals of ranking.”
Google’s John Mueller replied clearly: “No, domain age helps nothing.”
The same day, there was a Tweet from Daniel Garcia that said the opposite. He said:
“What is true is that Google gives some advantage to pages with new domain.”
Again, Mueller was quick and concise and said: “No, that’s not true”.
Lastly, someone tried to summarize Mueller’s thoughts and missed the mark a bit. Kevin Webster said:
“While domain age may not mean anything, the age of a good page with quality content and UX does organically if you pardon the pun. It will have likely soaked up more back links etc without 301 dilution. But correlation doesn’t equal causation.”
His tweet made some sense, and I could see what he was trying to say, but the technical pieces of it just don’t hold up. Mueller replied to his:
“We forward the signals with redirects, so there wouldn’t be any 301 dilution. I don’t see how age alone could be a good signal — content doesn’t get better automatically just because it’s old”.
This hits on something we said a little while ago in episode 128; you should be regularly revisiting old content to make it better, and that will help with rankings. Simply having old stuff on your site isn’t going to do anything for you, though.
