Getting more links to point to your site is important and difficult, but some people think they found a way to trick Google. No, it doesn’t work.

So back in episode 35, we talked about how Google handles redirects, and since then there have been a lot of people touting a new trick to get more links to their site.
It works like this: You buy a new domain, build links to that new domain, then set up a redirect for all of those links to point them back to your main website. Since redirects pass 100% of their equity, it’s brilliant! Except, you didn’t really accomplish anything.
A user on Reddit asked a question along those lines. They said: “Seo consultant advised me to buy a similar domain to the main, they will create web2.0, backlinks, blog comments and forum posts to that domain. I then use a 301 redirect to the main domain. He says that’s how everyone’s ranking quickly these days.”
Google’s John Mueller replied with: “The 301 basically makes the main site canonical, meaning the links go directly there — you might as well skip the detour, it’s just as obvious to the algorithms & spam team.”
That’s basically what we said back in episode 35. A redirect essentially creates a canonical; telling Google that the two pages are the same and to only use the new one, and that’s a good thing. It benefits people that use redirects properly, and it prevents silly techniques like this from accomplishing much of anything.
